October 23th 2008 KENMARE FLOODED

Kenmare suffered its worst flood in history. 15 businesses and residences were affected by the flash flood when the River Finnihy burst its banks on Thursday afternoon. Cars were in four feet of water, river water and sewerage washed along Bridge Street into The Square while approach roads were also affected. The heavy rain, a blocked footbridge, the rising tide and developments along the river have all been combined factors. The rivers where not cleared and Alder trees are allowed to grow along the banks. People believe it will happen again if nothing is done about it. A Kerry County Council spokesperson has stated that the footbridges were not the cause of the flood. They blamed the excessive rain across the county, super saturated land, a high tide and wind factors. The matter would be investigated further.
